Celebrating Julie: A Huge Thank You as a Beloved Colleague Retires

At Rochdale Gateway Leisure, our strength lies entirely in our people. Today, we have a mix of happy and sad emotions as we say a massive thank you and a very fond farewell to one of our most valued team members, Julie, who is beginning her well-deserved retirement!

If you have visited Gateway over the years, chances are you have been greeted by Julie’s warm smile and kind heart. She has been an incredibly dedicated part of the Gateway family, and her presence is going to be deeply missed by everyone here.

A Legacy of Kindness and Hard Work

Julie’s time with us has been defined by her unwavering hard work, her commitment to our mission, and, most of all, the genuine kindness she has shown day in and day out.

Whether supporting our members, helping out colleagues, or working alongside our fantastic volunteers, Julie has consistently gone above and beyond. She has a wonderful gift for making people feel seen, supported, and valued, leaving a lasting, positive impact on so many lives within our community.

To celebrate her special day, we surprised her with some cards, gifts, and an absolutely spectacular cake covered in fresh fruit to sweeten the occasion!

Find Your Beat: Welcome to the Rochdale Gateway Music Group

Have you ever noticed how a favourite song can instantly lift your mood, or how a simple rhythm can make you want to tap your feet?
At Rochdale Gateway Leisure, we believe that music is a universal language, one that has the incredible power to bring people together, spark joy, and build confidence.

That is exactly what our weekly Music Group is all about. Held every Thursday in our main hall at Kenion Street, this lively session is designed for adults with learning disabilities who want to explore music in a relaxed, friendly, and supportive setting.

Music for Everyone (No Experience Needed!)

A common question we hear is, “Do I need to know how to play an instrument to join?”

The answer is a very loud and clear: absolutely not!

Our session is not about hitting the perfect note or reading sheet music. It is about self-expression, having fun, and feeling a sense of belonging.
You do not need any musical background or prior knowledge – all you need to bring is yourself!

Connected Through the Beat

We structure our music session in a welcoming circle. Sitting together this way allows everyone to see each other, share smiles, and make genuine connections as we play.

When it comes to making music, you are in the driver’s seat. We have a wonderful variety of accessible instruments on hand, so you can choose whatever speaks to you on the day:

• Keep the beat with a drum.

• Add some shimmer with a tambourine.

• Make a splash with a cymbal.

Whether you want to lead the rhythm or simply sit back, shake a shaker, and enjoy the vibrations and positive energy of the room, there is a place for you in our circle.

Beyond the smiles and laughter, group music-making has some fantastic therapeutic benefits:

• Boosts Communication: For those who find words difficult, playing an instrument offers a wonderful alternative way to express feelings and communicate.
